He is the personification of what you wanted your freshman biology professor to be Guest Review from our Wake of Wallace voyage through the Eastern Indonesian Islands of Raja Ampat with expert guide and Wallace expert Tony Whitten. “I am a biologist by profession...how could I pass up a trip that followed a part of Wallace's collecting route?  The chance to visit one of the few remaining spots on earth that has not been overly disturbed by man was the main attraction. Super trip!! Tony Whitten was outstanding… enthusiastic, funny, full of wit and wisdom and tireless.  He is the personification of what you wanted your freshman biology professor to be. Knowledgeable, approachable, but mostly just bubbling over with enthusiasm for all things scientific and biological. For someone like me who started out doing field work as an undergrad but then get waylaid by bench science, having Tony along brought all the excitement of being in college field classes.  When I suggested it would...

I recently got asked what trip am I most excited about sending travelers on in 2014. My personal favorite has to do with dragons and not just because I’m also really excited for the 2nd Hobbit movie to come out! I’m talking about REAL dragons, the ones you can find only in the Komodo Islands of Indonesia. My wife and I had the privilege of joining one of our Indonesian Adventure Voyages on the Ombak Putih which departs from Bali and tip-toes through the eastern archipelago visiting remote fishing communities, deserted islands with off shore coral reefs of incredible biodiversity and of course foot pursuits to find dragons in the Komodo National Park. This photo shoud give you a pretty good idea of the size of the dragons. Not only are the adventurous parts amazing, but it’s everything in-between that makes this trip a winner too! The ship is a...

2014 is going to be an exciting year for adventure travelers and I couldn't be more excited our Bedouin trek to Petra. I’m drawn to this trip because it is unlike anything else being offered. The opportunity to camp with Bedouins under the starry desert skies, sipping tea around a campfire, tracing timeless paths through the mind-blowing landscape of Jordan and ultimately arriving into the “back door” of Petra, the magnificent Monastery, away from the hordes of day-trippers. Well, not everyone gets to do that!  What excites me is introducing our Wild travelers to an ancient culture and place that too often is overlooked due to the “noisy neighbors” surrounding Jordan. Jordan is a jewel of a destination, and accessing it by foot, through the beautiful sandstone desert, is something few adventure travelers ever experience. Our Bedouin trek to Petra was named among National Geographic’s 50 Tours of a...

Once in awhile, something comes along that truly fires the imagination, capturing a long-buried fantasy. For me, that idea can be found alive & well in our Bedouin Trek to Petra, and I believe this is what the good folks at National Geographic Traveler also recognized when they selected the Trek for their 2013 “50 Tours of a Lifetime.” Petra itself is every American kid’s holy grail – a fabulous, larger-than-life “lost city” hidden away behind steep, impenetrable walls. Add to that the notion of reaching this object of desire by way of trekking across rocky mountain passes, through brilliant sandstone river valleys, and camping with Bedouins –Bedouins, for petes sake! - under starry desert skies, and you have the stuff of every adventurous day dreamer’s dearest fantasy. But of course a successful trip is not made of fantasy alone, and with the Bedouin Trek to Petra’s seamless support structure,...

We are excited to announce that National Geographic Traveler has selected the “Wake of Wallace” adventure cruise in their May 2013 "Tours of a Lifetime" issue. This trip has also been recognized by The Active Times for providing one of "The best 30 new adventure travel trips of 2013". Skillfully led by Flora and Fauna International’s Dr. Tony Whitten, this adventurous itinerary goes from Ternate to Sorong through the Eastern Indonesian Archipelago and diverse island chain of Raja Ampat. Activities include seeking Wallace’s Red Bird of paradise and other avian endemics on guided jungle hikes, visits with local communities, and snorkeling the remote coral reefs in this world renowned marine ecosystem. Apart from the scenery and the expert tutelage of Dr. Whitten, what makes this trip so remarkable is the crew that takes care of you. All locals from different areas of the Indonesian Archipelago, they are a friendly bunch...
