Favorite Lodges and Awesome Fishing in Mana Pools

Favorite Lodges and Awesome Fishing in Mana Pools
On a recent safari in Zimbabwe I took a short flight from Victoria Falls (You can also fly from Hwange) to the Zambezi Valley and Mana Pools National Park, where the waters of the mighty Zambezi River make their way east from Lake Kariba to Lake Cahora Bassa before diving Southeast into Mozambique and the Indian Ocean. As our plane banked for a turn over the river I found it exhilarating to be seeing Zambia out the left window and Zimbabwe out the right.  Ruckomechi Camp is in a private concession owned by Wilderness Safaris within the greater Mana Pools National Park and was one of my favorite places to have visited during my 3 week journey. The area is vast with lots of areas to explore and the camp is situated right next to the river which gives you a wide diversity of activities, from game walks and drives to canoeing...

Hanging Over The Victoria Falls

Hanging Over The Victoria Falls
A short interview with Kim Newton of Washington, who planned a custom Botswana safari with a group of friends: How was your trip? All the camps and the activities were wonderful and memorable. In Linyanti often you would see multiple types of animals and birds dotted along the length of the shore simultaneously. For instance, one day you could see baboons in the foreground, impalas and warthogs in the mid-ground, elephants crossing the water in the distance, not to speak of all the birds everywhere. We really enjoyed the rookery when we were at Camp Kanana. We were having dinner when the termite hatching occurred after the first rain of the season at Kanana. We were swarmed in the lodge – it was a little freaky to be swarmed by the flying termites, but also very amazing. It only happens once or twice a year after the first rain. Our extra...

Honeymoon was beyond my expectations

Honeymoon was beyond my expectations
Hi Jeff, I must say the trip was beyond my expectation. We had a blast and we will definitely book again with Wildland. The first two locations were wow. Especially the staff in Thonga were extremely nice and knowledgeable. The food was fantastic. In our opinion this was the best place in regards of food. We saw whales, did kayaking, enjoyed the beach, snorkeling, etc. The second location, Phinda Mountain Lodge , was absolutely amazing. Our ranger Tobi was just great. He was so into it. He was very enthusiastic, energetic, friendly, educational, etc. The game viewing was spectacular - we saw the big five up close within 24 hours. The best part was seeing the lions feeding from a zebra. It was very personal and exclusive. That was what we were looking for. Our South Africa Honeymoon Safari was absolutely fantastic. Thank you for the very detailed planning and organization....

“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”

“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”
We noticed this African proverb chiseled into the wall in the Johannesburg airport as we passed through there, and it perfectly describes our trip, which was perhaps the most personal travel experience we've ever had. We expected the expansive scenery and wildlife to be amazing, and anticipated that lodges/camps would be fabulous, but what also left a lasting impression was the people we met. We are most grateful for the gift of time and sincere hospitality from everyone at Merrueshi who led us into schoolrooms, dorms, clinic exam rooms and the lab...who talked story about social traditions under an acacia tree, or world politics over tea in the lobby pavilion, or community development around the dinner table...or graciously allowed us to visit their family homestead and even sit inside a traditional home built by their mother's own hands. Alyssa and Ray at Ol Donyo entertained Elaine and I like longtime friends...

Cats of all different kinds

When it comes to Africa aficionados, Mauree Talman tops our list. She has traveled to Africa a whopping five different times with Wildland Adventures, to both Eastern and Southern Africa. She’s visited Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda, Botswana and South Africa, and recently returned to some of her favorite haunts in East Africa. “This was probably the best Safari I’ve been on (so far)” Mauree says. “I took so many pictures, almost 4000, that I don’t know where to begin. Each time I go thru the photos, I’m reminded of a sighting I forgot, there were so many good ones to remember. When I booked this trip, my goal was to see as many of the big cats as I could. They are my favorite, along with the other predators. So going to the Serengeti and the Mara was perfect. I saw more cats in the first few days of this trip that...
