The Hiking was Wonderful!!

The Hiking was Wonderful!!
This active family of four just returned from a custom Hikers Patagonia Adventure in Patagonia and share some of their incredible experiences: “First of all, we enjoyed all the hiking- it was wonderful!! Second, we loved all of our guides!  Lorena in Santiago took care of us well. Chris in Patagonia Camp was good and entertaining. Ismail, Frederico in Calafate were great. Andres in El Chalten was especially good. Had a nice pace for hiking and just an easy guy to be around for 9-10 hours. His knowledge of geology was great and interesting to us. Patagonia Camp yurts were fun, unique, warm, cozy, and loved that they were separated. El Puma , in El Chalten, was very comfortable and well situated. Loved Alta Vista in El Calafate because I wouldn't have wanted to be in town. I loved hiking from the house and riding the horses was special. Alta Vista’s...

The Best Trip We Ever Took!

The Best Trip We Ever Took!
After an exhilarating 17-day customized In The Wake of Magellan adventure , exploring Patagonia , Buenos Aires, and Iguazu Falls, these two travelers share their initial insights upon return home. “ We are returned from South America, and it was the trip of a lifetime! We both seriously thought it was probably the best trip we ever took! Very briefly, we were amazed at the amount of organization that so many transfers, flights, connections, and pre-paid fees were necessitated, and are truly amazed that you had it all organized and that it all went so smoothly. Guides would ask, "Did you pay for ?.....", and while we looked at each other with blank faces, the guide would look through our papers and then say, "Yeah, you're all set." We are very impressed. Also - the guides were consistently excellent, really excellent. And the food and wine at Singular, on the ship,...

Empanadas Para Morirse! // Empanadas to Die For!

Empanadas Para Morirse! // Empanadas to Die For!
When I was 15 I moved to a small town in the Pampas of Argentina as an exchange student. Knowing absolutely no Spanish upon arrival (besides hola and la cucaracha - neither being the most helpful), I found numerous other ways to communicate with my local family and hosts- my favorite being through food! Learning a culture’s culinary traditions is by far and away one of the best ways to gain new perspectives on who people are and where they come from. My host mom and I immediately hit it off as I started learning to cook some of Argentina ’s favorite dishes from her. One of my favorite dishes, that I still love to bake with friends and family, is Empanadas. Empanadas are the beloved comfort food of much of Latin America and come in numerous sizes, shapes and delicious flavor variations. The name Empanada comes from the Spanish word...

Best Bang for Your Buck on the Blue Dollar Rate in Argentina

Best Bang for Your Buck on the Blue Dollar Rate in Argentina
I often get questions from our travelers about the Blue Market Dollar Rate in Argentina and thought it would be a good idea to write about it for those trying to get the best bang for their buck so to speak while traveling in Argentina . In Argentina there 3 official exchange rates: 1) The real estate rate (not important for travelers) 2) The Official bank exchange rate (around 1 USD to approx 9 Argentine Pesos) 3) The Blue Market rate (around 1 USD approx 14 ARS) Travelers will of course only get the official rate at ATMs in Argentina and if they exchange money in the banks. The best way to take advantage of the Blue Market Rate is by bringing US cash ($20, $50 and/or $100 notes) and exchanging money at your hotels. Almost all hotels will gladly exchange your US cash at a much higher rate than what...
