Larger than life trip to Jordan

Once in awhile, something comes along that truly fires the imagination, capturing a long-buried fantasy. For me, that idea can be found alive & well in our Bedouin Trek to Petra , and I believe this is what the good folks at National Geographic Traveler also recognized when they selected the Trek for their 2013 “50 Tours of a Lifetime.” Petra itself is every American kid’s holy grail – a fabulous, larger-than-life “lost city” hidden away behind steep, impenetrable walls. Add to that the notion of reaching this object of desire by way of trekking across rocky mountain passes, through brilliant sandstone river valleys, and camping with Bedouins –Bedouins, for petes sake! - under starry desert skies, and you have the stuff of every adventurous day dreamer’s dearest fantasy. But of course a successful trip is not made of fantasy alone, and with the Bedouin Trek to Petra’s seamless support structure,...

Feynan Ecolodge in Jordan Among The Best In The World

The current June/July issue of National Geographic Traveler Magazine features a list of the “Best 25 Ecolodges” in the world. Many of them are accommodations we already include on Wildland Adventures throughout the world.  One of our favorites is the Feynan Ecolodge, located in Dana Biosphere Reserve, Jordan, included on our Jordan Explorer and the Bedouin Trek to Petra . Hiking in the Dana Reserve with Feynan Lodge in the background. Feynan Ecolodge is a 26-room solar-powered lodge with an ethos of providing unique visitor experiences, with minimal impact on the environment, while contributing to conservation work and providing income generation opportunities to the local community.  Coffee ceremony with local Bedouin from the nearby community.  In November 2012 we traveled together with Nabil Tarazi, Founder & Managing Director of EcoHotels . Nabil is a dynamic and dedicated entrepreneur and conservationist working closely with the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (Jordan's...

New Bedouin Trek to Petra

Are you looking for something completely new? Do you feel yourself slipping into a “been there/done that” funk? I have the cure! My name is Sherry Howland and I am the Jordan program director for Wildland Adventures and I'm here to tell you that our new  Bedouin Trek to Petra is a one-of-a-kind adventure you won't just find on every travel site. In fact, you will find it with Wildland Adventures alone. Pioneered by Yamaan Safady , one of Jordan’s most respected adventure guides, the Bedouin Trek to Petra was created by Yamaan after months spent living with the Bedouin tribes in the remote interior of Jordan, tracing their timeless nomadic routes and establishing the best campsites along the way.     Sherry and Yamaan share a laugh, one of many, trekking for 5 days into the back side of Petra  through the desert, mountains and wadis (canyons) of Jordan.   As...

The Calm Eye of the Middle East

Our Wildland Adventures Jordan tour group hikes into the back side of Petra  early in the morning before hardly any other day tourists can manage the hundreds of steps up from the main entrance. Arriving to Petra on the ancient trail by foot is spectacular!  Happy Holidays, Wildland friends and family! I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving and survived the various Black Friday/Local Saturday/Cyber Monday events. I must confess to being slightly out of the loop, having just returned from Wildland Adventures’ inaugural departure of our Bedouin Trek to Petra ! I was fortunate enough to join 6 of our most intrepid travelers as well as Wildland president, Kurt Kutay, on the 6 day, 50-mile journey from the Dana Biosphere Reserve south to the “back door” of Petra, entering the site at the awe inspiring Monastery. Timing is everything. We arrive early to the Monastery, spend the entire...
