Dining in the Brazilian Amazon

Dining in the Brazilian Amazon
With all the ingredients he needs in the Amazon, celebrity Brazilian chef Thiago Castanho, is offering up a 12-course tasting menu ($65 per person) at his restaurant Remanso do Bosque in Belem.  According to this recent article in the New York Times, Daring Fare, From the Amazon's Mouth to Yours , his restaurant has climbed into the ranks of Latin America's top-rated restaurants.  Call or emial our Brazil Program Director, Gretchen Traut , to plan a Wildland Adventure to Brazil, and if you go to Belem check it out and let us know if you get there before we do.

The Role Music Plays in Getting to Know a Culture

Whenever traveling abroad, I find a good way to get to know the culture and history of a country is through music. Whenever a significant cultural event takes place somewhere, you can be sure there will be some important music coming out of that time and place from the social commentators in the music world. From the evolution of blues music in the early parts of the 20th century, through the civil rights era of the 60’s, to the modern day, we’ve had musicians all along the way documenting their experiences and leaving us with a sonic history lesson of sorts. When people think of Brazil in terms of music, bossa nova is usually one of the first things to come to mind. Thanks in large part to Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes’ 1962 Grammy award winning “The Girl from Ipanema”, Brazil and bossa nova music are inextricably linked...

Rio With Your Heart Open

In mid-February The New York Times Travel section ran a piece about one woman's travels with her daughter to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, called Rio, With Eyes Open . While highlights of the city were mentioned, the over-arching theme of the entire article seemed to focus on the safety of the city and the writer's fears about visiting with her daughter. Here at Wildland Adventures we feel strongly that embarking on a journey while harboring preconceived notions about safety and security is never a good idea; rather, we advocate traveling smartly and 'with your heart open.' So we turned to Gabi Assis, our resident Brazil guru from Sao Paulo who has guided in the Pantanal and Atlantic Raiforest. As a Brazilian that has been working in the tourism industry for more than 10 years, Gabi responds to the question seemingly posed by the NYT journalist of “Would it be possible...

Celebrate Love Like the Latins Do!

Forget your sweetie this Valentine’s Day? Avoid the wrath of an angry cupid and borrow a page from some of our friends in Latin America who don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day on February 14. Buy yourself some extra time with one of these lines… Brazil: Everyone is busy getting their Carnaval samba on, so there’s no time to celebrate on February 14th. Instead, Brazilians celebrate Dia dos Namorados (Lovers’ Day) on June 12, conveniently located the day before Saint Anthony’s Day who is known as the ‘marriage saint.’ Tell your special someone that you were hoping to declare your love with a trip to Brazil in June to celebrate the way the locals do. We can help you make good on your promise! In Colombia, February 14th means little more than a boom for the country’s flower growers as this South American nation is one of the world’s largest exporters of roses....

New Places We Plan To Go In Far Off Lands

We always have new places we plan to go, great guides we know in far off lands to share with you, and new trips we have in design that we have not yet announced. Often our alumni travelers ask us to design new trips to places they want to go so they can travel there in our more authentic and in-depth Wild style of exploring the world. Or, sometimes we turn our own vacations into Wildland exploratory trips like Jeff Stivers did when he turned a trekking trip into the jungles of Borneo into one of our first new forays in SE Asia as our Untamed Borneo Adventure . We are also often approached by outfitters and guides in far flung places who want to introduce our travelers to their country, family and friends. Indeed, the best thing about what we do is developing new trips through our expanding network of...
