10 of our Favorite Hotels in Southeast Asia for 2016

10 of our Favorite Hotels in Southeast Asia for 2016
When planning a trip to Southeast Asia  finding the right accommodations can be a struggle. Here are some of our absolute favorite properties in the SE Asian region. They're unique and offer our travelers a way to spend time in areas of the world few get to explore. Relax in luxury in the middle of the Bornean rainforest or scout for komodo dragons from the deck of your Indonesian phinisi. Wake up to a kiss from a baby elephant in Thailand's Golden Triangle or gallop across the Thar desert on a breed of horses indigenous to the area. Beaches, jungles, mountains, and desert - find whatever strikes your fancy and plan your escape! Borneo Rainforest Lodge – Access to this jungle lodge is by 4 wheel drive vehicle and will have you questioning whether you’ve accidentally stepped onto the set of Jurassic Park. This jungle chic lodge, nestled deep in the...

Happy New Year from Siem Reap!

Happy New Year from Siem Reap!
The Doehring family just returned from a Southeast Asia adventure that started in 2015 and spanned Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. They didn't even return to the states until 2016 :) Starting in Northern Vietnam the Doehrings explored the countryside by bike, Halong Bay by boat, and Hanoi by street food vendor (the best way to do it!) After Vietnam, they jetted over to Luang Prabang in Laos where they learned about rice production and spent 2 full days living and interacting with elephants at the Elephant Conservation Center .  Paul says, " Luang Prabang is a beautiful city and one I could see myself living in. The architecture, the food, the people - everything was great!" Janet emebellished on the rice experience saying, "I'll never take rice for granted again!"  The Doehrings continued on to Southern Laos and explored the 4,000 islands. It's a  quick hop from there to Cambodia where...

Our Family's Trip to Vietnam and Cambodia Was An Amazing Adventure!

Our Family's Trip to Vietnam and Cambodia Was An Amazing Adventure!
The Oliver family just got back from 17 days in Vietnam and Cambodia! The parents, Brenda and Dylan, had traveled extensively on their own but wanted to show their 2 boys, Elliot (7) and Jackson (8), a different culture with a side of adventure! Here's what they have to say about their trip to SE Asia: Overall: The trip was an amazing adventure. Great learning and bonding experience for families On the guides: We really enjoyed our time with Huan in Hanoi, the kids loved Linh in Hue, Hein was great on the bike tour, Dat in Saigon was full of knowledge, Len in Siem Reap was wonderful and knew just the right pace for the temples. Thida in Phnom Penh was well informed and we loved bringing her son to the wildlife sanctuary with us. She was very generous and enthusiastic to have us try many roadside treats.  Meals: Meals...

Wild Cambodian Sticky Rice Recipe

Wild Cambodian Sticky Rice Recipe
For many years now I’ve been a lover of sticky rice, but on a recent trip to Cambodia I experienced a new take on this delicious dessert. In the streets of a very small and remote town, a man hovered over a large fire meticulously rotating stuffed banana leaves. Our guide handed the man some coins and two very charred pouches were handed over, still steaming hot from the fire. Inside I found a perfectly crisp, golden brown lump of sticky rice. I was amazed and inspired by the taste and texture of this treat and decided I needed to find a way to make it at home. The ingredients and supplies needed for this sticky rice are as follows: 1 C Thai Glutinous Rice 1 C Canned Coconut Milk 1/3 C Organic Sugar 1 Bag Frozen Banana Leaves Toothpicks Aluminum Foil You will also need either a rice steamer or...

Luxury Camping in an Angkorian Temple Complex

Luxury Camping in an Angkorian Temple Complex
Banteay Chhmar is a group of villages in northwestern Cambodia, just 20 km from the Thailand border. Currently among the top-listed sites for nomination to UNESCO’s World Heritage List, Banteay Chhmar (The Citadel of the Cats) is one of the great architectural masterpieces of Southeast Asia and the Khmer Kingdom’s epic Angkorian Period. The vision of Global Heritage Fund’s Banteay Chhmar Conservation Training Project is "to save the last great Angkorian Temple in Cambodia that remains unstudied, unconserved and unprotected and in doing so hand back the conservation of their heritage to the Cambodian people." Community involvement in the conservation project is integral to its success and ‘’Visit Banteay Chmar" is a community-based tourism organization that is helping to make this happen. This CBT offers local, English-speaking guides who lead detailed temple tours, boat trips and community tours. Other services enable visitors to explore the local area, including a silk center....
