Top 5 Reasons to Head to Costa Rica With my Padre

Top 5 Reasons to Head to Costa Rica With my Padre
My Dad and I are traveling to Costa Rica next week for a much needed vacation. I thought it would be a neat idea for each of us to write down the top 5 reasons we want to visit Costa Rica and compare them. A little about us first:  for starters, I'm in my 20's and my Dad is in his 60's. We've both been very fortunate to travel extensively, but his list is much more extensive than mine. Needless to say, finding a destination neither of us has been to was a challenge in itself. Luckily we have similar interests and both enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, rafting, snorkeling, etc...  We decided on Costa Rica in a very technical fashion... we both wrote down a list of our top 5 places we wanted to visit next and Costa Rica was the match!  Now for the reasons we want to go to Costa Rica;...

The First Step in Family Adventures

Since our children have been born, we’ve traveled. It’s been mostly small things – trips to visit my parents in Lake Tahoe, lots of camping, a road trip from Seattle to Yosemite last summer. We’ve taken them to Hawaii as well, but I’ve been waiting to take them on their first international vacation. I want them to experience somewhere different, but not out of their comfort zone. Somewhere not too far away, but with a good mixture of culture and wildlife.  Now that they’re 6 and 3.5 I think it’s about time. Why now? Honestly, because my youngest is potty trained. Seriously. Also, because I think they’ll remember it now. Cassie, our 6 year old, went to Puerto Rico when she was 14 months old and she remembers none of it. I want their first trip to be something that they remember with their own heads rather than through the photo...

More than just a room with a view

I was interviewing someone today for a position in Wildland Adventures and when we asked the candidate what are two of the most important elements of meaningful travel experience she replied, "One is the accommodations." Where we bedded down was not so important when we started 30 years ago; that would not have been the right answer many years ago when "the experience" was considered more about the "adventure" itself and the associated cultural encounters. Today the experience is so much more. As this prospective candidate explained her answer: "...space is a reflection of the culture we are in and has, even though at times quite subliminally, an everlasting impact on how we remember our time in a place." Samode Palace is one of India's truly great palace hotels. Picking the right accommodations is important as to how it reflects the local culture and landscape through design, architecture, cuisine and hospitality,...
