Crafting your own itinerary is really the way to go!

Crafting your own itinerary is really the way to go!
Marilyn and Steve, along with their friends Tom and Betlyn, just returned from a customized adventure exploring the top sites of Patagonia . Beginning in Santiago, they continued on to a luxurious and active jaunt in Torres del Paine at Explora Lodge, glacier viewing in El Calafate, sunset sailing in Bariloche and finishing in Buenos Aires with time to catch a live jazz show and test out their tango skills! Marilyn recounts their experience below. “I am just now getting a moment to write about the trip…Bottom-line: it was fabulous! The concept of crafting an itinerary and identifying where and how much time you spend is really the way to go - I just cannot imagine being “captive” on a scheduled tour anymore! Meeting the local guides at each stop was a real treat - Jorge in Santiago, Fernanda in Buenos Aires, Marissa in Bariloche, Pilar in El Calafate, and of...

Wild South Africa!

Wild South Africa!
Abby S. and Steve B. chose an off-the-beaten-path custom itinerary for their South African holiday this past Fall.  A particular highlight from their trip was spending time in the Drakensberg mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The steep cliffs of these mountains surround Lesotho and are so rugged that there is only one break where a 4x4 road could be built to access the mountain kingdom at Sani Pass. "The hiking is superb. A variety of trails, in terms of length, altitude gain/loss, and views, depart directly from the resort. The views are stunning; kind of like the highlands of Scotland. Most trails are well-marked, and a map purchased at reception was serviceable. We saw elands, baboons, and raptors while hiking, and beautiful flowers." Abby and Steve also enjoyed seeing some spectacular wildlife viewing at Tanda Tula Lodge in Timbavati private game reserve as well as at Phinda Mountain Lodge in...

Still So Excited by the Huge Variety of Birds We Were Able to Capture on Film

Still So Excited by the Huge Variety of Birds We Were Able to Capture on Film
This adventurous couple just returned from a 17-day customized Manu Wildlife Safari Overland Adventure . After visiting Cusco, The Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, several areas of the Amazon, the Colca Canyon and Arequipa, see what wisdom they have to share! “The trip was amazing; it enabled us to see many aspects of Peru--from Machu Picchu that we had heard so much about to the huge variety of animals (especially birds!) We really enjoyed the overall impression of Peru--so many aspects! We loved all the ruins and terraces that illustrated how vast the Inca influence was and surprisingly how much was pre-Inca. Fascinating to see how much remains the same. Two of our favorite experiences were: 1) The Amazonia Lodge en route to Manu National Park- there were so many great birds! 2) In Arequipa, we saw "juanita", the ice maiden: definitely worth it—fascinating!   Our guides were good! Vignor was very...

Mystical, Magical, Mysterious and Awe Inspiring

Mystical, Magical, Mysterious and Awe Inspiring
This couple just returned from almost a month of travel on a custom trip to Argentina and Peru adventure .  Gary recounts some of their favorite moments while in South America. “We had heard great feedback from my wife’s sister who went to Peru in the preceding year with Wildland. Wildland’s open approach, the low key nature of their interactions interspersed with enthusiasm at the highest level, and the feedback from more than one person were enough to ensure that we were going with "like minded" folks in selecting Wildland. It turned out to be absolutely the case. The entire itinerary was a fantastically put together sequence that we all worked together on. Great collaboration throughout. Our favorite memories of the trip were:  [In chronological order as they happened on the trip]: (1) Roaming around freestyle in Buenos Aires and staying at Legado Mitico while doing so. It's a magical and...

Empanadas Para Morirse! // Empanadas to Die For!

Empanadas Para Morirse! // Empanadas to Die For!
When I was 15 I moved to a small town in the Pampas of Argentina as an exchange student. Knowing absolutely no Spanish upon arrival (besides hola and la cucaracha - neither being the most helpful), I found numerous other ways to communicate with my local family and hosts- my favorite being through food! Learning a culture’s culinary traditions is by far and away one of the best ways to gain new perspectives on who people are and where they come from. My host mom and I immediately hit it off as I started learning to cook some of Argentina ’s favorite dishes from her. One of my favorite dishes, that I still love to bake with friends and family, is Empanadas. Empanadas are the beloved comfort food of much of Latin America and come in numerous sizes, shapes and delicious flavor variations. The name Empanada comes from the Spanish word...
