A Very Unique Wildlife Experience

A Very Unique Wildlife Experience
Two of our alumni travelers just returned from a customized Manu Wildlife Safari adventure in Peru and share their thoughts on several aspects of the trip below: "FAVORITE EXPERIENCES: The one day KM 104 hike up to Machu Picchu via the Sun Gate was the perfect way to enter the site for the first time. Hardly any one else on the trail, plenty of interesting info from our guide as we hiked. Great experience as one finally gets to the top and suddenly looks down on Machu Picchu. The macaw clay lick was also exceptional...a very unique wildlife experience. ON GUIDES: Both our guides William in Manu and Reuben in the Sacred Valley were excellent...Reuben in particular. I really enjoyed the fact that they shared information about their own lives and experiences with us. Both shared their experiences with the Shining Path, for instance. Lots of jokes and laughter ON ACCOMMODATIONS:...

Light, Desert, Wine and the Andes- Argentina’s Northwest Treasures

Light, Desert, Wine and the Andes- Argentina’s Northwest Treasures
In light of a recent New York Times article entitled, “In Argentina, Wine, Art and Altitude” by Alessandra Stanley, I felt inspired to take a moment to highlight our Wine, Cultures and Canyonlands: Mendoza and Northwest Tour , and put a special emphasis on Argentina’s Northwest. In Stanley’s article she tackles a grand feat of successfully painting a picture of the rugged beauty and oddities that thrive at Donald Hess’ Colome Vineyard and his James Turrell-dedicated Light Museum in the northwest corner of Argentina. “Together, the Hess winery and art museum may well be one of the most puzzling one-man grand projects since the Pyramids of Egypt”, Stanley only half-jokingly points out. She indulges in the, somewhat comical and rather imaginative contradiction that is the rigid, traditional and extraordinary Colome winery of Swiss businessman, Donald Hess, and his contrasting obscure light museum, which poses as a shrine to James Turrell’s work,...

Rare Photos of Baby Harpy Eagle

Rare Photos of Baby Harpy Eagle
Harpy Eagles are one of the most powerful birds of prey in the world. Their talons are the size of Grizzly Bear claws and their gigantic beaks make quick work of the monkeys and sloths they hunt for food.  These massive birds of prey have a wingspan of six to seven feet and, when sitting, have the height of a five-year-old child. They are also one of the least observed raptor species in the world. Combined with diminished number due to habitant loss and human trophy hunters, Harpy Eagles don't soar to hunt, but lurk in the trees like a gigantic winged monstrosity, waiting to ambush prey in surprise. (It goes without saying that monkey and sloth nightmares are dominated by Harpy Eagles.) They also require a huge territory for hunting, with a single pair occupying between 3,000 and 7,000 hectares of forest. So for birders and wildlife enthusiasts alike, a close...

Tropical Paradise and Dragons!

I recently got asked what trip am I most excited about sending travelers on in 2014. My personal favorite has to do with dragons and not just because I’m also really excited for the 2nd Hobbit movie to come out! I’m talking about REAL dragons , the ones you can find only in the Komodo Islands of Indonesia. My wife and I had the privilege of joining one of our Indonesian Adventure Voyages on the Ombak Putih which departs from Bali and tip-toes through the eastern archipelago visiting remote fishing communities, deserted islands with off shore coral reefs of incredible biodiversity and of course foot pursuits to find dragons in the Komodo National Park. This photo shoud give you a pretty good idea of the size of the dragons. Not only are the adventurous parts amazing, but it’s everything in-between that makes this trip a winner too! The ship is a...
