Los Glacieres National Park Tightens Age Restrictions for Perito Moreno Glacier Trekking

Los Glacieres National Park Tightens Age Restrictions for Perito Moreno Glacier Trekking
National Park Authorities in Argentina have recently mandated a strict adherence to the age restriction guidelines that were previously not enforced for travelers embarking on the Mini Trekking or Big Ice Expedition trek on Perito Moreno Glacier.  Of the more than 350 glaciers within Los Glacieres National Park, Perito Moreno Glacier is easily the most famous due to its massive size (more than four miles across and a height of over 180' above the water level), the high frequency at which it calves and the accessibility.  It is one of the few places in the world where individuals without previous mountain experience can don crampons and hike along the glacier's surface, exploring crevasses, ice caves and shallow pools, after just a quick catamaran ride across the lake and a short approach hike.  Previously, age restrictions were not enforced and travelers with good physical fitness could participate at the discretion of the...

How to Train for a Trekking Adventure

I love exploring our world on my own two feet be it via backpacking, mountaineering, climbing or hiking. On any given weekend (occasionally sliding into Monday), you can find me high on a peak in the North Cascades or 30 miles deep in the Hoh Rainforest. This passion for the outdoors stretches into wild places across the globe and some of my favorite trips to design for our travelers involve trekking to Machu Picchu or hiking in southern Patagonia .   Sunrise in Glacier Peak Wilderness. Photo courtesy of Nick Drake. Physical challenges in the outdoors are exhilarating, reaffirming and impactful, but for your memories to be ones of breathtaking vistas and natural wonder (not gasping for breath and feeling faint from exhaustion) you need to be fit enough to enjoy what you are doing. Here’s what I do to train for my own adventures, tips that are sure to have...

Photography Tips for Patagonia

My wife and I recently had the opportunity  travel to Patagonia  with Wildland Adventures. Since I work as a professional photographer shooting sports (primarily soccer) and concerts I was very interested in pretending to be a landscape photographer on this trip. I have been asked to provide some thoughts on taking pictures during a trip like this.  Preparation  If you are not a landscape photographer then trying to prepare is daunting. Although I spend a lot of time on forums, the tutorials and books written by Ian Plant have been a huge help to me ( http://www.ianplant.com/ ). Although he specifically addresses Patagonia, his general comments and his Photoshop lessons are great. These are tools that I rarely use in my other photography. Equipment  This is a horrible dilemma, you want to have everything at your disposal but of course weight is an issue. I know of no way to have...

Argentina's Perito Moreno National Park Expands with Land Donation from Conservation Land Trust

When you travel to Patagonia with Wildland Adventures, you have the opportunity to make a donation to Conservacion Patagonica, a non-profit organization headed by Kris Tompkins with the mission of "creating national parks in Patagonia, in collaboration with neighboring communities, and local, regional, and national governments." A sister trust, the Conservation Land Trust, also headed by Doug and Kris Tompkins, made history today with one of the largest land donations in Argentine history; 37,500 privately held acres given to Argentina to expand Perito Moreno National Park to include Patagonia's second-highest peak, San Lorenzo. Amazing news for climbers and conservationists alike! Read on for the full story, reprinted from Conservacion Patagonica's newsletter. "In one of the largest land donations in Argentine history, Doug and Kris Tompkins donated Estancia El Rincon to the national parks system of Argentina today, in a formal reception in Buenos Aires. In the northwest area of the Santa...
