Cultural encounters were the surprise of our Tanzania Safari

Cultural encounters were the surprise of our Tanzania Safari
When the Kaplan family traveled to Tanzania on our Serengeti Family Safari in June they knew that they were in for some great wildlife. What was unexpected was the people that they met and the cultures that they experienced along the way. "The entire trip was fabulous. The highlight was actually the cultural encounters that we had. I expected the animal part of the safari but our visit with the Bushman was beyond anything I could imagine and my kids loved playing soccer, volleyball, and frisbee with the locals. Our guide Dominic was unbelievable. He was incredibly knowledgeable but was also a truly amazing person. He kept everyone engaged and let things be spontaneous, making time to add to our itinerary where beneficial. We LOVED him! My favorite experience was hunting with the Bushman and learning about their culture. We also had a great interaction with some women in the Datoga...

A Well of Inspiration in Tanzania

A Well of Inspiration in Tanzania
Many times over the years, Wildland travelers have truly awed us with their generosity and humility. But it’s even more of an inspiration when that person is only 12 years old!   During her Wildland Serengeti Family Safari, 12 year old Jamie visited the Mikocheni Primary School alongside our guide Hadji. What she discovered left a lasting impression, moving Jamie to make it her mission to assist the school and local community through building a well.  There is no source of water near the school and the children must carry their own water, in some cases walking up to 6 miles. This project will provide fresh water within easy reach of the thirsty students. Watch this short video, created (and sung!) by Jamie and her 3 older siblings, outlining her plan to improve the quality of life for the children of Mikocheni School.     We continually donate to local...

The Game drives were like being in a National Geographic Show

The Game drives were like being in a National Geographic Show
Wildland travelers, Dave Olander and Dan Wofsey, visited Tanzania on our Serengeti Wilderness Safari during the short rainy season of in February with their wives Jitka and Carol. Their trip covered the northern part of the country, traversing Tarangire National Park, the Lake Eyasi Basin, Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti. This can be a particularly excellent time to catch the great migration in the Southern Serengeti as the wildebeest prepare to calve in a two week long coordinated event. They recount their experience here: Jeff, I have had multiple trips to unusual places, but our trip to Tanzania was the best one. The game drives were like being in a National Geographic Show. A personal highlight for me was the animals. It was all about the animals, the exotic terrain, and the beauty of the place. I had high expectations and they were exceeded.  Our time with the Hadzabe was fascinating,...

Beyond Your Typical Family Safari

Beyond Your Typical Family Safari
I want to introduce to you to the Dolan Family, a family that traveled with us on our Serengeti Family Safari in Tanzania. They wanted an overview of Tanzania and the opportunity to experience the wildlife and cultural aspects of the country. I'm happy to report they accomplished A LOT more than that on their family safari in Tanzania.  I'll let Robin Dolan tell you a little bit about their trip: "We had some amazing, mind boggling experiences and memories like: watching a herd of elephants play in water with babies not knowing how to work their trunks quite right, watching needy kids dance and play and celebrate the things we brought them- truly warming our hearts entirely, warthog mamas hilariously chasing their babies, seeing the beautiful culture, interesting religion and outright poverty that create the ways of life of Tanzanians, monkeys attacking our empty Land Rover almost making off with our...

Maasai Warriors Scrap Lion Hunt for Olympics

Maasai Warriors Scrap Lion Hunt for Olympics
An alumni just sent me a cool story they found on NBC and a short message thanking us for setting up such a great safari in Tanzania for them: "A highlight of our Tanzania safari this year was our exposure to the Maasai. Thanks for setting us up for an unforgettable journey of discovery!"  It got me thinking that I'd also love to share this story with you. In addition, I added a clip of one of our Maasai leaders talking about their spear competitions and video of them throwing their spears below. Something we often witness on many of our Kenya safaris and Tanzania safaris. Plus, our guests actually get to practice it with the warriors! Here's the NBC story on it: Kenya's Maasai Warriors Scrap Lion Hunt for Olympics Video from On Safari In Africa With Wildland Adventures (Pt. 2) Spear throwing at 6:22 Keeping it wild, Jeff Stivers
