Reciprocal Learning though Responsible Tourism in Peru

Reciprocal Learning though Responsible Tourism in Peru
Wildland Adventures was founded on the principle that culturally and environmentally responsible travel can be a powerful force for change. Tourism should contribute to conservation and benefit local communities. As part of our community outreach, Wildland Adventures and our partners in Peru have begun to donate to Amantani in honor of guests who travel with us to Peru. Amantani is a non-governmental, non-profit organization (NGO) working to help indigenous Quechua children in the region of Cusco, Peru. This highly effective program provides safe housing, educational opportunities and cultural activities to children ages 7 to 18 years old. Amantani, "invites you to re-imagine the relationship between the world’s so-called poor and those in a position to help. It’s time...to move away from pity and assumptions of cultural superiority, towards reciprocal connections based on respect and mutual understanding". In the interest of reciprocity, one of the Amantani children, Yuri, would like to share...

Meet Your Guides: Luis at Explora Atacama

Meet Your Guides: Luis at Explora Atacama
As the year comes to a close, I wanted to take the time to highlight some of the key players in Wildland Adventures’ travel experience: our guides! This year, I had the chance to be out in the field with several of our amazing guides: Joao and Abadias in the Brazilian Amazon, Bira in Salvador, Tiago in Chapada Diamantia, Everaldo in Rio de Janeiro, Cata and Nicole in Torres del Paine, Chile and Oscar and Luis in Atacama, Chile. One of my favorite memories, while out in the field this past year, was hiking up Lascar Volcano with our guide Luis in the Atacama Desert in Chile. Luis has made a strong reputation for himself amongst Wildland travelers for his expert knowledge of astronomy while entertaining guests during his informative lectures about the night skies at the Explora Atacama observatory in addition to his intricate knowledge of the unique flora, fauna...

Camera Gear For Adventure Photography

Camera Gear For Adventure Photography
Probably the coolest aspect of my job, aside from traveling the world, is the opportunity to document my trips with photos and video. Luckily for me, I’m really into photography. When I was in college, I got started taking photos of skiing and snowboarding. Then I began packing my DSLR on all of my trips and I’m absolutely sure that submitting photos from my adventures helped me land my current job. Now photography and videography are a large part of what I do and magazines like AFAR have featured my work. This year I've been on two work trips and I've decided to share a bit about my gear for the budding photographers out there. My first trip was 3 weeks of adventures in Southeast Asia and the most recent trip was a 3 week trip to Chile to attend the Adventure Travel World Summit. The following photo won the adventure photo contest...

Guest Video From Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands

Guest Video From Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands
I love my job as Program Director for Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands anyway, but when I begin my Monday morning by opening an email from a just returned traveler and seeing an outstanding video of his family having the time of their lives makes even a not-so-great day fade to the background. Two families, long-time friends, traveling through the Ecuadorian countryside and onto the Galapagos Islands. As Bryan (the videographer) says “I am glad you all enjoyed it. Thanks for arranging the trip, the video was easy to make with all the great footage and good times.” This just puts a giant smile on anyone’s face, it says EVERYTHING about the experience of traveling with your loved ones to very special places on our planet! Check out their video: Galapagos family vacations are not only an unforgettable experience, but also an incredible learning opportunity for children and adults. Your friendly Ecuador...
