Melinda and John are 4 time Wildland Alumni and returned from a custom trip to Peru that included, focus on organic gardens and community in the Sacred Valley, a inspiring time in Machu Picchu, hiking in the Colca Canyon-deepest canyon in the world, exploration in the famous white-stone city of Arequipa and ended with a culinary and artistic bang in Lima!
“Gretchen, you helped us plan this trip, and we thank you so much! No complaints, it was a great trip. We just want to let the Wildland team know of a few exceptional experiences/places!
Our favorite hotel (and they were all good) was El Albergue. We loved the atmosphere in the cafe, where folks off the train and hotel guests mingled. The food was exceptional, and the Pachamanca a fun experience. The focus on organic gardens, the school for sustainability, the seed saving process were so gratifying to see. The hotel rooms and views and gardens were delightful. Of course, being able to explore the ruins in Ollantaytambo was fabulous. And I think I am finally doing better in pronouncing 'Ollantaytambo' !
Eddie Pizarro, our Cusco and Sacred Valley guide, is terrific. He stayed cheerful & helpful even as we slowly slowly (for me anyway) trekked the Inca Trail for one exhausting and marvelous day! Of course, he was extremely knowledgable and conveyed his awe at the masonry and designs of the ancient civilizations.
Thank you for choosing Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel Inkaterra, perfect. And we felt we had ample time to tour and explore Machu Picchu. What a thrill, and even after all we'd read and photographs that we'd seen, it exceeded all expectations and awed us.
So happy that we included Colca Canyon and Arequipa as well. We enjoyed the Sunday morning traditions in the plaza at Chivay, loved the walks/hikes, continuously amazed by the views. Our guide was excellent, explaining much about folks' daily lives & history & flora & fauna. And yes, we saw the condors! We loved the luxury at las Casitas del Colca - who wouldn't?!
We felt that we had a perfect balance of leisure exploring and guided tours. By the way, John got a thorough shave in Arequipa - but not so thorough as his memorable Turkish one!
Lima! Loved 'Second Home' and were delighted when the owner give us a tour of her father's studio. The half day tour was perfect. Our guide left us at La Picanteria, where we had lunch while our driver waited. A long long wait for him, as we had a long wait for a spot at the table. We, however, were 'adopted' by two young women whose kids were in school together. They spoiled us with advice, friendship, good cheer.
A warmth we saw throughout Peru. I think we'll return someday! Thank you all, Melinda”
