A Complete Turkish Dinner from the Kutays

A Complete Turkish Dinner from the Kutays
My father came to the US as a student enrolled at Berkeley in 1939 and met my mother when she was working in a soda fountain. They married, moved to Turkey where she learned to speak Turkish and cook Turkish cuisine. They moved back to Los Angeles where I was born and raised on delicious Turksih dishes all my life. Three common delicious dishes that were always on the table in Istanbul when we visited relatives, and frequently served at home in California are below.  When my sister learned to make the walnut chicken dish, she made me--her younger brother--hand squeeze the oil out of the walnuts to drizzle over the dish before serving. These recipies are delicious and easy to make for a complete and authentic Turkish dinner, especially because all three dishes can be served at room temperature.  Walnut Chicken One whole roasted chicken or 6-8 roasted chicken breasts – skin removed...

3 Reasons Why Travel to Turkey is #1

3 Reasons Why Travel to Turkey is #1
The most frequent question people ask me as the founding director of Wildland Adventures is: "What is your favorite destination?" Depending on my mood I might say Manu National Park in the Amazon of Peru, or tiger viewing in India, or the wilds of the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica. But most of the time I declare my #1 destination is Turkey. I qualify that choice by simultaneously acknowledging that it's not just because of my Kutay family Turkish heritage. And I'm not the only one who rates Turkey #1. Among all our Wildland Adventures around the world, Turkey is the one destination we most often hear from returning travelers they didn't expect they would be so surprised, so amazed, and so delighted; that their Wildland Adventure in Turkey was one of the best trips ever. 1. Why so surprised? These days there is some initial trepidation traveling to this part...

Unlocking the Mediterranean

Unlocking the Mediterranean
What's my favorite Wildland Adventure? I'm often asked what my favorite Wildland Adventure is...and I have to say, I love Turkey! And I'm not alone, our Turquoise Coast Odyssey consistently receives rave reviews as one of the most culturally rich trips of a lifetime. I admit. I'm biased. I have traveled to Turkey all my life to visit my Turkish relatives. Travel with us to Turkey and you're greeted as family by our exceptionally knowledgeable and fun-loving guides. Meet Alper Ertubey!  He has been leading Wildland Adventures for 29 years, and has introduced scores of our travelers to their favorite home away from home.  He's also the one to talk to about food...passionate about the cuisine of his homeland, there is no one better to share a meal and a drink (or two) with, Şerefe! The combination of experiences on our Turquoise Coast Odyssey is second to none; exploring the bazaars and backstreets of Istanbul, hiking surreal landscapes leading to subterranean churches in Cappadocia, and a relaxing voyage along the...

A Mother & Daughter Wine Tasting in Spain

A Mother & Daughter Wine Tasting in Spain
This October I went on a mother/daughter wine and culinary trip to the Basque Country of Spain. My mom and I had never been to Spain together and thought this trip would be perfect for us because it contained two very important things... wine and food. First off, flying is not on my list of favorite things to do. However, I do love spending time with my Mom and drinking wine. So, I jumped on an airplane for what I knew would be a trip filled with new and wonderful experiences. Since this was a wine and culinary tour there wasn’t the rush of adventure as in zip lining or wildlife safari’s - the adventure for me was seeing a new place with my mom, trying new foods and seeing the wine making process. My favorite thing that we did was in San Sebastián; a really fun cooking class where we learned...

The best travel moments are accidental

The best travel moments are accidental
While wandering in the small alleys of Mykonos Island I came upon this older gentleman resting and watching pedestrians pass by. To me this moment captured the relaxed atmosphere I was so enjoying in Greece, so I set up to take a perfect photo, Click and oops – I got photo bombed! As the photo-bomber approached I showed him his photo and he explained he is a photo-bomb expert. A while later after perusing the local shops, I peeked into to one of the inviting cafes that lined the street. In this area, called Little Venice, the restaurants are on a cliff directly over the Aegean Sea. Stunning! I get ready to snap another photo and who do I see but my photo-bomber! He calls out to say this means we must meet. So this is how Benjamin and I met Yanni visiting Mykonos from Northern Greece with his brother, Vasilli,...
