Travel To Turkey Is Safe

Recent public demonstrations in Turkey have raised concerns about the safety of travel to Turkey. We have been in very close contact with our colleagues throughout Turkey, who along with other professional, liberal-minded, intellectual, old and young modern secular Turks, have participated in a popular uprising calling for protection of personal freedom and democracy. In addition, a Wildland group has just returned home who were in Istanbul when the demonstrations began, and another group has just arrived there this week. We report on their safety and amazing experiences below. Recent photo taken in Istanbul by Wildland traveler John J. Lopinot. Events unfolded last week when a small group of protesters gathered in Taksim Square to protest cutting of trees to build a replica Ottoman-era military barracks and shopping mall. The protests devolved into mass demonstrations against the prime minister Erdogan, the most powerful, popular and polarizing leader Turkey has seen...

We are having a FABULOUS time in Turkey

We are having a FABULOUS time in Turkey
We love getting updates from our guests while they are traveling, recently we received this from a guest on one of our trips to Turkey . "Just a quick note to let you know that we are having a FABULOUS time. Deniz is the best and shares our love of getting lost. We feel like we are traveling with a good friend and not a guide! This is truly turning into the adventure of a lifetime. We love, love, love the flexibility of the schedule. You did a fabulous job of planning this portion and Wildland knows the best in country operators. More when we get back!" Cheers!!! Susan Lopinot Guest on Wildland Adventures Turquoise Coast Odyssey

5 ½ Foods to try in Turkey

Turkey is a fresh-food lover’s paradise. Once you see the markets brimming with fresh cucumbers, eggplants, melons and hand-made cheeses, you will not be surprised when you taste the depth of flavor in the local dishes. Some of the most delicious meals are shared with family or friends from a large platter where you dip your torn pieces of Italian-style bread into the tomato-based sauces. For today, I give you 5.5 Turkish dishes to try on your adventures in Turkey . 1. Su boregi : Many of you may have tried one type of borek , baked pastries made of layers of phyllo dough filled with cheese, herbs, and vegetables. I recommend trying my favorite, su boregi (or water pastry). It is akin to a simple lasagna with layers of boiled dough and a mixture of feta cheese, parsley and oil. The borek is brushed with butter and baked in a...

Turkey Travel and Security

We want to set one thing straight: This is a great time to travel to Turkey! With the preponderance of recent news about civil war in neighboring Syria, a suicide bomb among diplomatic quarters of the capital city of Ankara, and a single American woman traveler who was found dead in Istanbul, it is understandable that travelers and their families would be curious about the safety of a trip to Turkey. You may wonder if these events would have an impact on your tour to Turkey and how welcoming the country is to Americans in general. We can assure you that travel to Turkey is very safe. For one, the eastern frontier with Syria and various cross-border activities including occasional skirmishes and refugee flows is far removed and goes on completely unnoticed from the sites and towns we visit on our trips. The recent discovery in Istanbul of Sarai Sierra, an...

Travel to Turkey - End of the World

As portrayed in the movie and book ‘Up in the Air’ I am one of those frequent flyers who hoards miles to obtain elite status with the airlines, ensuring all sorts of perks and special treatment. My airline of choice is United and at the start and end of each year, my partner and I like to go on ‘mileage run’ trips. The destination isn’t the most important factor other than it generally needs to be somewhere new to both of us, the base fare is inexpensive and we can upgrade to first class on the international legs. It’s a lot of fun to spin the globe, search for fares and just consider the possibilities. Sometimes we land on a destination that neither of us considered before, like Brussels, which we visited in January 2011 and had such a blast just exploring the city on foot, tasting authentic lambic and...
