Costa Rica Teen Review: "Everything was perfect"

IMG_5563

Our Costa Rica director, Grettel Calderon, was recently delighted to receive a very thoughtful and articulate thank you note and review from one of our 13 year old travelers! This incredible teen researched companies and trips and chose to go on our Costa Rica Active Family Adventure with his grandparents, taking advantage of the experience for one of his school assignments at the same time. If you're wondering if your teens will like Costa Rica, read on!

"The trip could not have been any better. It was the perfect amount of time to spend in each destination and all of the activities and the accommodations were incredible. I liked this itinerary because we explored the rainforest by boat, by sky, and by walking. We saw the animals through nature walks, boat tours, kayak tours, hanging bridges, and more. There were lots of adventures and "firsts". I had never been horseback riding, canyoneering, or kayaking, and it was the second time I had been zip-lining and whitewater rafting."

"My favorite places were Arenal and then Tortuguero. I especially loved the boat tour through Tortuguero because we saw so much wildlife (spider monkeys, white throated capuchins, both species of sloth, tons of birds, etc.) I especially loved the canyoneering because of the adrenaline rushes during the free falls. I also loved the nature walk in Arenal and the nature walk in Manuel Antonio because we saw a lot of wildlife. It was incredible to see the turtles laying eggs and I loved being at the mercy of the water while whitewater rafting."

"All of the local guides that we had for each activity were amazing and always made me feel totally safe. In Tortuguero, our local guide Miguel spotted monkeys, sloths, scarlet macaws, herons, hawks, vultures, basilisks and much more. All the other local guides could spot tons of wildlife and were very knowledgeable, even if that wasn't part of their job. For example, the ocean kayaking guides recognized camouflaged birds and found faraway white faced capuchins and the canyoneering guides recognized birds from a moving truck!"

"Esterling was our guide for the last 2/3 of the trip and was easily the best guide that I have ever had. He always spotted tons of wildlife and was patient enough to make sure that the three of us always saw it. He knew tons of information about every species of plant or animal. For example, he explained the ecological relationship between the leaf cutter ants and a fungus. He answered every single one of my questions and always went the extra mile, even trying to find a replacement when my camera broke."

"Tortuga Lodge was comfortable, and it stood out because of the attention to detail. Every time we got back from an activity somebody would be waiting with a platter of super refreshing fruit juice. There were complementary guided tours of the garden where you could see tons of wildlife and all of the hotel guides were super experienced and patient. The food was super delicious even though it all had to come by boat."

"The Nayara resort stood out because of sheer size and we had our own villa. There was a free 24 hour golf cart service and there were 3 jacuzzis where I ordered watermelon juice. The breakfast selection was immense and the location was perfect. The Villas Si Como No had a really nice pool and waterslide and in the morning you could see squirrel monkeys in the trees."

"I loved all the foods and exotic drinks, such as drinking Piña Colada out of a real pineapple. My favorite two meals were lunch at the Vida Campesina farm and lunch with Doña Miriam. At the farm, first we made our own tortillas. Mine ended up ripping in half. Then we ate lunch from a buffet. I had chicken in a super delicious sauce, fried cassava root, and green banana and plantain. I don't usually enjoy chicken, but I loved it because of the incredible tomato-based sauce. I loved the cassava root and green banana + plantain mix because they were such nice tastes."

"Lunch with Doña Miriam was my favorite meal. We ate lunch in her house, and she cooked us sea bass. It was easily the best fish I had ever tasted! I don't know how to explain why, but it was just perfectly cooked, and after squeezing a lemon it just tasted mouthwateringly delicious. That is just the only way I can describe it. I usually have trouble finishing a plate of fish but I ate this up in a couple minutes. The rice, beans, potato salad, and fried green banana were all perfectly made and delicious."

"Grettel was the reason that we chose Wildland Adventures. While other companies took days to respond to my queries, she gave long informative answers in hours and she helped us plan the add-on to Tortuguero so we could see the turtles. There was literally nothing that I would change about this trip. Everything was perfect! If your traveling to Costa Rica, don't worry, because Wildland Adventures will take care of everything!
