Susan Goldsworthy (three-time alumni!) and Kirk Friedland traveled with us to Bhutan this past January and returned with nothing but rave reviews for the Land of the Thunderdragon. They hiked to the iconic Tiger's Nest, stayed the night in a traditional homestay, and wandered through the glacier-carved valley of Phobjika. Read some of their favorite memories and stories from their adventure below:
We absolutely loved Bhutan - what a unique people and culture. There was an overwhelming sense of peace and goodwill throughout the country and the landscape, geography and culture were fascinating. I would rate it as one of my favorite trips and places that I have ever visited.Thank you for an excellent experience!
What places or experiences did you enjoy most and why?
We loved Phobjika Valley, the black-necked cranes and our stay at Dewachen Lodge - lovely setting and beautiful room. The highlight for me was the climb to the Tiger's Nest - challenging, dramatic and surreal.
How would you rate your guide?
All around expert! Our guide Sonam was superb! From start to finish he was a true professional - polite, reserved, extremely knowledgeable and well-organized. Our trip was seamless from start to finish from ordering our food ahead of time to our arrival and departure from our hotels. He was very proud of his country and delighted in sharing it with us. I believe I can say without a doubt that he is the best guide I have ever had on a tour, and, as you know, that is saying something as I have traveled extensively!
How were the meals? What meals stood out?
A culinary delight! We decided we never had a bad meal the entire trip! Sonam arranged all of our meals and ordered for us (honoring our request for no red meat). Each meal saw our table laden with tasty chicken, fish and at least six varieties of vegetables. All was tasty!
Kirk and Susan's final comments regarding their trip:
The tour was the experience of a lifetime! We loved Bhutan and enjoyed every second of our visit there. Our heartfelt thank you!
