Open since April of 2016, the Highlands has quickly become our favorite luxury accommodation on the Ngorongoro Crater Rim.
Location: The Highlands uses the relatively untraveled Northern access road into the Ngorongoro Crater. Being on a less traveled road avoids the traffic jams getting into the Crater and gives you a peaceful start to your morning safari.
Architecture: This is not your average tented camp. At an elevation of 9000 feet this is a high elevation lodge and the modern enclosed domes are reminiscent of Patagonia, not the traditional tented camps you find in much of Africa. It's a unique and memorable difference.
Community: Highlands Lodge has forged ties with the surrounding Maasai villages and you can take a walk to visit with them. Interactions are an informal exchange of information, where both parties can learn about each other rather than a show or display of Maasai culture.
"The Highlands was our favorite place of all of the lodges we visited. It's secluded, it's the only place to stay in the area and we went on a hike with our fabulous Maasai guide. It gets chilly at night so we got hot water bottles in bed and warm fireplaces – what an unexpected treat!" – Gail Kantor, Dec 2016
