How to Choose a Family Safari

How to plan a family safari in Africa

One size does not fit all when it comes to creating a custom family safari in Africa. We're all unique and what works for one family may not be the best fit for another. The key to crafting the perfect safari that engages every member of the family starts with finding out what your family is looking for. The adults are going to be responsible for choosing dates and a target budget. While planning for the kids is the most important factor when it comes to where you go in Africa.

Here are a few questions to be prepared to discuss with your safari expert:

How old are your kids?
What do they like/dislike?
What are they most interested in?
Do they prefer being active?
How do they do on road trips and flights?

The more you can tell me, the better I can sort through the different options available to find that "goldilocks" adventure that's just right for your family.

For example, our Ultimate Uganda Gorilla Adventure is wonderful for families with teens in tow over 15 years old (the minimum age for gorilla trekking). Here's what one of our guests had to say:

"We chose the Ultimate Uganda Gorilla Adventure because my daughter and I both have a strong interest in primates and we like to be physically active… One of our best experiences was entirely unplanned. My daughter saw a woman wearing a dress that she liked at one of the tourist markets, but the dress was not available at the market, so our guide took us to a shop in Kasese to see what they had. The shop owner then took us to the local market, where we bought fabric and someone custom-made the dress for my daughter in three hours. It was an amazing part of the trip!" - The Cardins

For younger kids, families might consider our 9-day Malaria-Free South Africa Family Safari. Those with more adventurous kids might appreciate our 8-day Botswana Family Safari which includes the exclusive use of a remote camp in Botswana's Okavango Delta where kids can take part in learning directly from their guide on how to track wildlife, start a campfire, shoot a bow and arrow and even drive a 4x4!

Our most popular family safari, and our best value, is our 10-day Serengeti Family Safari which is privately led by a professional naturalist guide who is an expert in differentiating the experience across all members of the family. One of the benefits of considering Tanzania is that this trip is perfect for traveling over the Christmas and New Year's holidays. Book this one early! These dates fill well over a year in advance!
