The Donovans and the Caplans recently returned from their epic Wildland Adventure in New Zealand spanning both the North and South Islands. Throughout their 24-day itinerary, they stayed in virtually every conceivable type of accommodation from expedition ship, to mountain lodges, local owner-operated B&Bs, and the luxurious Kauri Cliffs and Bay of Many Coves. They covered a vast range of scenic landscapes and activities including hiking and kayaking, a scenic boat trip and helicopter ride, and learning about the natural and cultural history of New Zealand from regional guides. And when not one, but two cyclones rolled in, we worked with guides on the ground to make adjustments and keep their itinerary on track watching out for them every step of the way.
"It was a truly memorable experience. We really appreciate all of Wildland's efforts in crafting the itinerary. We also appreciate the meticulous attention to detail and the effort to reach out to each of the local service providers to ensure that they were on track." The Caplans
"We truly enjoyed everything, but the standouts were hiking in Fiordland, the overnight boat on Doubtful Sound, kayaking in Abel Tasman National Park, hiking the Queen Charlotte Track and the flight to Cape Reinga." - The Donovans
"It is really hard to single out our favorites experiences, however Fjordland was beautiful throughout and we particularly enjoyed spending a night on Doubtful Sound. The helicopter trip and being able to witness the start of the GodZone competition was a highlight and Marlborough Sound was peaceful and scenic and we really enjoyed our two days on the Queen Charlotte Track. Finishing up at Bay of Islands was outstanding and the scenery everywhere was breathtaking." - The Caplans
"Our guides, Mark, Stephen and especially Evie, were great in Fiordland. Our transfers were always comfortable and the drivers did their best to tell us about whatever area we were in." - The Donovans
"Every one of our guides did an excellent job, providing us with insights into the culture, geology, geography and history. We particularly liked Yvette who was really positive, knowledgeable and funny, but they were all really good. Our drivers were all on time and got us where we needed to go, generally with an amusing commentary along the way." - The Caplans
"We stayed at every conceivable kind of accommodation except a tent. The B&Bs (Dunedin, Nelson, Paihiri) were very comfortable and welcoming, Bay of Many Coves and Kauri Cliffs were luxurious treats and our Doubtful Sound bunks were truly authentic!" - The Donovans
"Although we don't often stay in B&Bs, we had some great ones on this trip (Carl and Avril in Dunedin were excellent hosts as was Woodi in Nelson and Inge in the Bay of Islands). The Bolton in Wellington was perfect (great location and amenities), Bay of Many Coves was truly relaxing with outstanding food and service) and Kauri Cliffs was truly special." - The Caplans
Advice for Travelers
"Go as soon as you can and stay away from the main sights and all those tourist buses. We saw and did so much without ever having to stand in a queue." - The Donovans
"Why did we wait so long to visit NZ? It has spectacular scenery, truly nice people and very good food. It was like no place we'd ever been." - The Caplans
