Message from Wildland alumni after returning from a custom trip to India and Nepal.
Debbie, Jesse and I returned home safely. We have had some really great trips in our lives, but this was the best. Outstanding, fantastic. Despite the ungodly heat and monsoon rains, we never had a better time. Everything was seamless without any aggravation or confusion.
Your itinerary was perfect as regards what we wanted to see... There was always cold bottled water on hand. If we wanted some "street food" the guides knew where to go and we NEVER got sick.
All of the guides and drivers were helpful and the guides were extremely knowledgeable. Having travelled to India and Nepal many years ago, I was afraid that the trip might be "too sanitized" and my family would not experience the real India. The guides took care of that and were more than happy to guide us through the narrow backstreets, negotiate the cows, dogs, monkeys and pigs and have a great time visiting temples and learning about the Hindu, Jain, Sikh and Buddhist religions.
We had a driver from Delhi to Agra named Vijay. As our driver for a week, he became a real friend. He was always ready with cold water, always watching out for my family and gladly stretching out the drives so that we could take pictures of elephants, camels, monkeys and village life. He knew where the good photo ops would be when we were not with our guide. In Jaipur, when my wife and son got tired, he and I went driving and walking down side streets, stopped for tea and visited several local temples.
I can say we had the most fun at Chitwan. Despite the heat, humidity and lack of air conditioning, the people at Tiger Tops were top notch hosts. The Tharu village was not a tourist trap. There were no stores and we had a wonderful time going through the village on an oxcart and by foot. The elephant safaris were great. Feeding and washing the elephants was the most fun we have had anywhere in this world. We had some excitement when a large bull rhino charged at us and our elephant started running away. While crossing a swollen river, with water nearly up to our feet, the elephant thought she would lie down and take a bath. We soon imagined ourselves being thrown into crocodile infested waters, but the mahout got control and only our legs got wet.
Overall, the trip was seamless. We were well taken care of and I wanted to thank you for arranging the itinerary with me. I have travelled around the world and have always arranged my own trips. This is one case where I am glad that I did not. I would not have had as much fun, seen or learned as much if I had tried to arrange this myself.
I know it was not the optimum time to visit the region, but the guides, agents and drivers turned what could have been a quite miserable time into a trip we will never forget.
