"Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves." - John Muir
Having just returned from Patagonia, I am reminded how a hike through the woods can revitalize my mind and body. With epic vistas, gorgeous forested landscapes, and flora and fauna at every turn, it is easy to turn off the cellphone, forget that mental list of chores back home and just walk in awe of the beauty that surrounds you.
The vast landscapes of Patagonia are energizing and humbling, from the deep blue maze like fjords of Chile's Lake District and the jagged mountain peaks rising above the Beagle Channel in Tierra del Fuego. There is rarely a place to look in Patagonia that isn't awe-inspiring. The geographic area of Patagonia covers some 400,000 square miles – roughly one and a half times the size of the UK. Everywhere you go offers incredible views and activities, from the spires of Torres del Paine rising from the seemingly endless guanaco-filled steppes to calving hunks of ice falling from the Perito Moreno glacier into the icy blue waters below in Los Glaciares.
Trekking in Patagonia is every hiker's dream with trails leading between the craggy Andean mountains and topped with icy-blue glaciers, waterfalls cascading along the trails, through scrub-land dotted with turquoise glacial lakes, flowering meadows, and ancient windblown forests. While the trails can be challenging, the experience and sights along the way make the journey worth it. Each step along these trails is a step further from the daily stresses. Reaching that gorgeous viewpoint or summit is rejuvenating to your spirit, and the sense of accomplishment when you hike further than you have before is transformative. It's easy to do with the amazing views in Patagonia!
While the rugged nature of the landscape can make it a challenge to see some of the more iconic animals like puma or huemul (Andean deer), it is truly an unforgettable experience when you are lucky enough to spy one. As their land is slowing being encroached upon with dams, urban growth, and resource extraction, the presence of national parks like Torres del Paine and Los Glaciares are increasingly important for their survival.
