What Makes Costa Rica Unique?

Costa Rica is an extraordinary country located in the Central American Isthmus, therefore the country has functioned as a bridge in the exchange of wildlife species between the continental masses of North and South America. There are very few places on earth that have as much diversity as Costa Rica, especially for the size of the country.

Here are some examples of why Costa Rica is so exceptional:

Biodiversity: I have been in the Corcovado National Park and in one morning observed tapirs (mom and calf), two anteaters, a family of coati, a family of peccaries, a sloth, three species of monkeys, tons of birds, insects, butterflies and the following morning a puma female with her two cubs...

What else can you see in the country?

  • Over 1,000 species of butterflies
  • Over 1,200 varieties of orchids
  • Over 850 species of birds
  • More than 130 species of freshwater fish
  • More that 4,000 species of insects
  • Over 160 species of amphibians
  • Over 220 species of reptiles
  • More than 1,600 species of fresh and salt water fish
  • 208 species of mammals
  • Over 9,000 species of plants
  • Cloud forests, Rain Forests, Volcanoes (some still active), mangrove wetlands, one of the top 10 rivers for rafting in the world, some of the best surfing beaches, swamps and more!

Proximity: Costa Rica is close to the US and Canada, normally no more than 2-8 hours from the main cities in the United States and Canada. There are now two international airports.

The Food: There are hundreds of exotic fruits, vegetables, spices, world class quality coffee, great food from typical casado to ceviches, gourmet and fusion cuisine, etc.

Affordable: It is still quite affordable, at least much more than Europe.

Eco-Friendly: Costa Rica is committed to Eco-tourism and doing things right.  With over 20 National Parks, 8 biological reserves and a series of protected areas that captivate ecotourism lovers.

The Weather: We have AMAZING weather all year round as we only have 2 seasons: dry and rainy. The rainy/green season also offers a lot of sunshine, but for those not used to rain (our friends from Nevada for example!)  you might enjoy the dry season. Those who enjoy the rain will love watching a downpour in the jungle, it is quite magical!

Oceans: We can visit the Atlantic and the Pacific Ocean in the same day.

Adventure: The country is a natural playground with dozens of adventure activities from zip lining, canyoneering, river rafting, horseback riding, kayaking, hiking, surfing, paragliding and many more.

You'll have to come and experience it for yourself, to truly get why Costa Rica is one of the most diverse and unique places on the planet.
